Cho Kwanghee: «Human Court»

We find ourselves in the year of 2121. In the capital of the East Asian Union, an android seems to have killed a human being. Yunpyo, a lawyer and activist, pushes for a fair trial of the android – with a court, a hearing, a defense; a study of motive – instead of its simple ‹discharge›. A complicated legal battle ensues, drawing not only the private life of the lawyer and his relationship to the android, but also the grander political threads of the age into its vortex: the EAU's constitution itself seems to foreclose the possilibity of such a trial, and in the South Pacific, a war is fought between the forces of the old order and the Posthuman Liberation Front (PLF), an alliance of androids, nonhuman animals, and their human sympathizers. The android, in turn, wants nothing more than to travel back to their place of origin, a manufacturing plant, hoping to gain an insight into their identity.

Cho Kwanghee, a lawyer turned writer, presents his new novel «Human Court», the first to be translated into German, and a huge popular success in his native South Korea (right now, it is being adapted into a musical). On 19th of April, he will visit us at the ZLG for a reading from the Korean original as well as from the English and the German translations. Literary scholar Joseph Lee will subsequently place Cho Kwanghee's work in the broader context of South Korea's contemporary literary landscape. Daniela Tan of the UZH will guide us through the evening.

Wir schreiben das Jahr 2121. In der Hauptstadt der East Asian Union hat ein Androide einen Menschen getötet. Yunpyo, Anwalt und Aktivist, kämpft für eine faire Gerichtsverhandlung für den Androiden, die eine ordentliche Anhörung, eine korrekte Verteidigung, und eine Verhandlung bedeuten würde – statt dass man den Androiden wie üblich einfach ‹entsorgt›. Ein komplexer, philosophisch aufgeladener Gerichtsthriller folgt, der nicht nur Yunpyos Privatleben durcheinander bringt, sondern auch das grösseren politische Gewebe seiner Zeit: Eine solche Gerichtsverhandlung scheint an den konstitutionellen Grundfesten der EAU zu rühren, und im südlichen Pazifik tobt ein Krieg zwischen den Kräften der alten Ordnung und der Posthuman Liberation Front (PLF), einer Allianz zwischen Androiden, nichtmenschlichen Tieren, und ihren menschlichen Sympathisant*innen. Der im Zentrum stehende Androide derweil möchte nichts sehnlicher, als zum Ort seiner Entstehung zurückzureisen, einem Herstellerwerk, in der Hoffnung, etwas über seine Identität zu erfahren.

Cho Kwanghee, ein ursprünglich zum Anwalt ausgebildeter Schrifsteller, stellt am 19. April am Zentrum für literarische Gegenwart seinen neuen Roman «Human Court» vor – seinen ersten ins Deutsche übersetzten und ein Bestseller in Südkorea, wo er eben als Musical adaptiert wird. Er wird aus dem koreanischen Original lesen, wir werden aber natürlich vor allem aus der deutschen Übersetzung hören. Der Literaturwissenschaftler Joseph Lee wird in einem anschliessenden Vortrag Cho Kwanghees Werk im breiteren Kontext der südkoreanischen Gegenwartsliteratur platzieren. Daniela Tan von der UZH wird durch den Abend führen.
